Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME)
About Us
Established in January 2003, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) is committed to excellence in engineering education, research, and professional development. Since its inception with an initial cohort of 45 undergraduate students, the department has grown significantly, graduating more than 1,045 engineers and 21 Master’s degree recipients as of June 2025.
The department offers a structured and comprehensive suite of degree programs designed to meet national and global accreditation standards: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Engineering (M.Engg.) and, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering.
Currently, the department supports 436 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students. All programs emphasize academic rigor, analytical proficiency, ethical responsibility, and lifelong learning, preparing graduates for leadership roles in industry, academia, and research.
The Mechanical Engineering curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in the fundamental areas of the discipline, including: Solid Mechanics, Static and Dynamics, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is dedicated to educating the next generation of technical leaders through a rigorous integration of theoretical principles and hands-on, industry-aligned design. The department maintains a vibrant research ecosystem where faculty and students collaborate on interdisciplinary innovations, consistently publishing in high-impact global venues. Beyond the classroom, holistic development through professional workshops and international design competitions is encouraged. Committed to continuous improvement and global accreditation standards, The Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIST cultivates adaptable, well-rounded engineers ready to solve complex real-world challenges.
Vision, Mission and Program Educational Objectives
Vision: To be nationally and internationally recognized in providing world class mechanical engineering education, producing qualified engineers who are innovative, immediate contributors to their profession and society and successful in advanced studies and research.
Mission: The mission of the Dept. of ME is drawn from the vision of MIST. The mission of the Dept of ME is as under:
- To educate and motivate the students through well designed curriculum for knowing the fundamental and technical knowledge in Mechanical Engineering discipline.
- To produce skilled human resources capable of investigation, analysis and design solutions for relevant technical problems while also adhering to social values.
- To enhance technical as well as entrepreneurship skills with the ethical values through collaborations with various academic institutions, research organizations and industries.
- To promote Research and Development (R&D) for technological innovations in the emerging areas of mechanical engineering.
The undergraduate Mechanical Engineering program have following program educational objectives:
- PEO-1: To develop strong academic foundation, technical and professional skills to excel in various sectors such as govt./nongovt jobs, industrial and production related jobs, allied sectors and military.
- PEO-2: To provide sufficient depth of knowledge to engage in lifelong learning, higher education, collaborative and multi-disciplinary work, as well as conduct research and development in traditional and emerging areas of mechanical engineering.
- PEO-3: To develop versatile leaders capable of working in diverse teams to solve complex engineering problems from first principles and demonstrate ethical judgement and team spirit and interpersonal skills for contributing to society.
- PEO-4: To adapt at employing knowledge, technology, modern tools and entrepreneurial skills to establish sustainable business solutions as well as pursuing diverse career paths.

- Short Courses: Based on the requirement from the students, Govt. establishments, industries, etc. dynamic short courses of one to four weeks are conducted by the department of ME. Some of the recent short courses include Programmable Logic Controller, Modern Features of Automotive Vehicle and Vehicle Inspection Procedure, Hydraulic System Design, Air Conditioning Duct design (HVAC), etc.
Faculties
Led by the Head of Department, the Mechanical Engineering faculty at MIST comprises a diverse team of 5 Military Faculties, 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, 16 Lecturers, and 1 Research Assistant. Drawn from military, industrial, and academic backgrounds—and supplemented by domain specialists from renowned institutions —our faculty integrates theoretical rigor with real-world application.
Driving a high-impact research ecosystem, our faculty has authored over 150 publications in the last five years while fostering extensive global collaborations. This scholarly innovation directly informs our mentorship of undergraduate research and capstone projects, cultivating graduates with the professional competence essential for modern engineering leadership.
Labs and Teaching Infrastructure
The Department offers a cutting-edge environment designed to foster collaboration and inquiry. Our modern classrooms are fully equipped with high-speed connectivity and multimedia tools to support interactive learning.
In addition to standard academic coursework, the department places a strong emphasis on experiential education. The department is equipped with state of the art facilities that allow students to bridge the gap between classroom concepts and real-world application. To effectively complement theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning, the department currently has 12 well-equipped laboratories:

Departmental Library
To augment the learning facilities in the Department, a Department library has also been established. This library is in addition to the MIST Central library and holds over 700 books. The books in the library are procured based on the recommendations of the faculty members and students and are mainly available to assist the students in their research work. The library is well-subscribed by the students and is a hub of research work and project activities undertaken by the department. The library provides the students undertaking different courses and an ideal platform to exchange ideas and collaborate. An interactive website is introduced to manage issuing books.

With committed faculty, the ME department cultivates a dynamic and collaborative research environment that advances knowledge and equips students with essential analytical skills. With over 100 conference papers and over 52 journal publications since 2019, our students and faculties are actively present in the ME research arena. Our expertise spans critical domains including Alternate Fuel Technologies, CFD, AI & Machine Learning, Robotics, Smart Manufacturing, Industrial Automation, Sustainable Energy, and Biomechanics. Students and faculties of ME departmnet have recieved “Best Paper Award” at different national and international Conferences. The ME department have also conducted several collaboration research with Bangladesh Military and successfully completed many consultancy projects.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering strives to ensure that its students excel not only in academics but also in research. The department regularly hosts conferences, seminars, and workshops to enhance knowledge and exposure. These events are conducted by renowned scholars and industry professionals with insights into emerging trends and innovations in the field.
The department has proudly hosts the International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Applied Science (ICMEAS) since 2017. ME Dept successfully organized the 2nd International Conference, ICMEAS 2022, continuing its mission to bring together leading scholars, scientists, academicians, researchers, and industry experts from around the world to share their experiences, research findings, and innovations. In 2025, the department hosted the 3rd edition of the international conference, ICMEAS 2025, reaffirming its commitment to fostering global collaboration and advancing the field of mechanical engineering and applied sciences.

Contests
SolidWorks Design Competition
A dedicated design contest is being held for students to demonstrate and refine their 3D modeling and CAD skills using SolidWorks every year since 2018. This competition not only sparks creativity but also strengthens students’ proficiency in modern computer-aided design tools.
Intra MIST Mechanical Engineering Olympiad 2024
The MOTO MIST Automotive Club successfully organized the Intra MIST Mechanical Engineering Olympiad 2024, a premier academic competition designed to challenge the sharpest minds across all levels of the institution.
Trash-to-Toy Car Challenge
Organized by the MOTO MIST Automotive Club, this competition encourages students to build functional toy vehicles from recycled or repurposed materials. By turning “trash” into working models, participants develop ingenuity, sustainability awareness, and hands-on fabrication skills.
Campus-Hour Contests
As part of regular campus-hour sessions, the department hosts varied contests — cultural, technical, and quizzing — that encourage broader student participation beyond the classroom.
Extra-Curricular Activities
ME students participate enthusiastically in interdepartmental sports, including volleyball, football, and athletics. The department achieved the title of Inter-Department Football Champion (2022) and secured Runners-Up in Inter-Department Volleyball for three consecutive years (2022, 2023, and 2024). Students regularly take part in cultural programs designed to promote creativity and community engagement. ME participants earned Best Performance in the Inter-Department Cultural Competition 2024.
• Participation in International Debate: One student represented the department at the IIUM Asian British Parliamentary Debate Championship 2025, where their team reached the EFL Semi-Finals, placing among the Top 8 teams in Asia.
• Mathematics Olympiad: A student secured 5th position in the National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad (Dhaka North).
• Hult Prize at MIST 2024: A Mechanical Engineering student, as part of Team dECOr, achieved the position of 1st Runner-Up.
• Hult Prize Bangladesh 2025: Student Team EcoPrint became the On-Campus Champion in the national Hult Prize program.
• Science & Astronomy Competitions: A student from the department participated in the RUET Astronomy & Science Society Quiz 2025 with Team Asteroid Destroyer, finishing as 1st Runner-Up.
• Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS), USA 2025 – 3X student and 1X faculty advisor from Department of Mechanical Engineering participated as part of the Team Quantum Flyers.
• National Space Carnival: In the 6th National Space Carnival, students designed a futuristic spacecraft and presented its maneuvers and utilities through a PowerPoint presentation. Their model received top evaluation for research depth, creativity, and technical insight.
Notable Achievements
Following the guidance of skilled Faculty members and Supported by MIST authority, undergraduate and post-graduate students gained many achievements over the years, from participating in prestigious international competetions to winning multiple best paper awards at both home and abroad. The talented and self-motivated students continuously prove themselves by successfully competing and winning various awards in numerous national and international competitions such as:
Formula Student Combustion China (FSCC) 2025
MIST BLITZ, the formula student team from Mechanical Engineering department, won the Best Foreign Team award and excelled in static events, earning Best Presentation Performance and 4th place in Business Plan Presentation. The team also cleared all mechanical inspections and completed endurance laps—an impressive feat for a first-year team.
University Rover Challenge (URC) 2025 & 2021
MIST Mongol Barota, Mars Rover team from MIST primarily composed of students from the ME and CSE departments, placed 14th among 38 global teams at URC 2025 in Utah, showcasing strong capabilities in robotics and rover engineering. Twelve students and a faculty advisor contributed to the rover’s development. The team became world champion, scoring a perfect 100 in the Equipment Servicing Mission, marking a landmark achievement in global rover design.
Anatolian Rover Challenge (ARC) 2024
Mongol Barota secured 2nd place (Runner-up) among 21 teams at METU, Ankara, demonstrating exceptional rover performance across simulated planetary missions.
NDiTC Init 2019 – Clash Bots
The team achieved 1st place in the robot combat competition, showcasing excellence in robotic control, durability, and real-time strategy.
International Telco Warfare 2019 – Robo War
MIST’s ME and CSE combined team secured 1st place in the Robo War segment, demonstrating advanced autonomous robotic combat capabilities.
Mars Habitat Design Contest
The department’s team won top honors among 50+ teams for an innovative, sustainable Mars habitat design.
Robot Design – Robot Nokshar Asor
The team earned the championship in a 3D robot design challenge, demonstrating outstanding robot conceptualization and modeling expertise.
Our Projects
Dept. of ME is not only focused on academic development but also development of communication and leadership skills of its students. Dept. of ME always encourages and gives support to the students to take part in different activities. The ME department laboratories supports ongoing Research & Development in areas such as composite materials, robotics, engine testing, additive manufacturing, materials testing, semi-autonomous and remotely operated ground and aerial vehicles, fluid mechanics and CFD, material fatigue, and dynamometer-based experiments. Faculty and students actively collaborate on international research. Among the noteworthy projects are:
- Development of Subsonic Wind Tunnel
- MIST X1: ROV for Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) Operation
- Convertion of a Class-VI 3-Ton Vehicle as Training Aid
CATS-MIST (ME)
Centre for Advisory and Testing Services (CATS) is one of the prime features of MIST and Department of Mechanical Engineering provides instruments, facilities, technicians and resourceful minds to conduct varies testing. ME Department is responsible for testing performance and parameters of Hydraulic Pump, 2 Wheel Vehicle, 4 Wheel Vehicle, Material Properties, Engine Performance etc. These bring revenue and fame to the department as well as MIST.
- Hydraulic Pump Test Bench: The pump test bench available at MIST is capable of testing the deepest submersible pumps bought into Bangladesh. Today, MIST tests pumps of WASA and many other private organizations.
- Vehicle Testing: ME Dept. started out with three wheeler CNG testing and has reached out to test four wheelers too. Testing includes emission test, fuel economic test, brake test, acceleration test, engine performance test, material test etc.
- Dynamometer: Recently developed dynamometer is capable of testing high horsepower engines as well as motors.
- Material Testing: With the material tester machine, MIST can provide the exact amount of element present in a certain part or a product. With the help of furnace, MIST can also test the phase of iron present in the part.
- Fatigue Testing: ME Dept. is currently also testing fatigue of a part. It has tested fatigue of different motorcycle parts in recent times.
- Hardness Testing: ME Dept. is also testing hardness of material and have tested the motorcycles hardness properties.

The department maintains a strong alumni network through MechaMIST, its dedicated alumni association, in addition to MISTAS (MIST Alumni Association).
Moto MIST Automotive Club
Established in 2013, MOTOMIST Automotive club, operated under Mechanical Engineering department is becoming a one of the most popular extracurricular activities for enthusiast of automotive. With different seminars and workshop arranged over the last few years, MOTOMIST has showcased its capability to enrich the knowledge in vehicles and provide mind relief for the students. Also, it has arranged industrial visits to Runner Automobiles. The club is backed up by the Automobile laboratory and has set up a strong display in its features to show young enthusiast the recent trends of automotive as well as the fundamentals. The ever-improving automotive sector will always be a fascination dream workplace for young engineers and MOTOMIST will help to make that come true in the coming years with more assembling units coming to Bangladesh.
